Speaking Activity: Repetition (Intonation)

Directions: Suppose you are a soldier during World War II. In order for you to survive, you should be able to communicate to native speakersYou have to apply the audio-lingual approach by imitating what your general will say. You have to repeat the questions to your fellow soldiers with the same way that your general has articulated the questionsYou should also be able to exhibit proper rising and falling intonation of yes/no and wh- questions through imitation.

Rubrics:

Commander - Has successfully imitated what their general had said with spontaneity; has articulated the yes/no questions with proper rising intonation and wh questions with proper falling intonation.

Colonel - has imitated what their general had said; has articulated the yes/no questions with falling intonation and the wh- questions with rising intonation but with a few mistakes.

Sergeant - has imitated what their general had said; has articulated the yes/no questions and/or the wh- questions in a monotone manner, not following the proper intonation.

Directions: Suppose you are a movie critic and you are to imitate with emotions through word stress the memorable lines from famous movies for OscarsYou are in a movie convention with fellow critics and you have to articulate the lines with proper stress in order to choose the best movie quote of the year.

Rubrics:

Expert - was able to consistently and accurately place the stress on the syllables within words and on loaded words, was able to do appropriate phrasing and pausing, was able to articulate the lines with proper intonation and was able to deliver spontaneously the lines.

Skilled - was able to occasionally place the stress on syllables within words and on loaded words, was able to do some appropriate phrasing and pausing, was able to articulate some lines with proper intonation, was able to deliver the lines but with some interruptions.



Novice - rarely places the stress on syllables within words and on loaded words, was able to do few appropriate phrasing and pausing, articulated the lines in a monotone voice, was able to deliver the lines but with many interruptions.
